Today, I found myself driving out of the Adirondacks late at night. Since today was not a day of travel, I had to make it one, so Nancy and I drove to Caroga Lake to pick up our animals and return them home. I have many things I would like to write about tonight. I still haven't written about Chris Funkhouser and Michael Peter's two readings at the Bowery Poetry Club a week before yesterday. Or about my meetings with Mark Lamoureux and Jeremy James Thompson yesterday.

The visual poet never sees the world, only the surface of the world, the shapes that lie upon it both hindering and aiding sight.

I give readings to perform. Readings have become essential to my practice of poetry, because I want my words to exist in various forms: as shapes on the page, as concepts, as sounds, as sounds propelled into the air by a body, sloop-shouldered, bald, and wandering over a stage. I need a poetry of the eye, of the mind, and of the ear, and a reading, in the way I do a reading, allows me that.

Given that I've had a long night, that I still have three longish videos to post for my posting about tonight's reading, and that I'm writing this note two hours after its post date and time, I've decided to put off a discussion of tonight's reading until tomorrow. There's much to write about and many people to thank, and it was a good night, but I'll leave details for tomorrow so I can try out a little thing called sleep.

View from the 48th Floor of the Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta, Georgia (23 July 2008)

I tried to get the desk clerk to move us to a higher floor, but we ended up on only the forty-eighth. The view is quite magnificent, especially since the exterior wall is merely a set of windows, from ceiling to floor.
